What are Exercise Supplements?

When you are involved in an exercise regimin your body may become deficient in certain areas. For example, if you are trying to build muscle then your daily intake of protein may not be adequate to build and repair the muscles after the workout. If you are involved in any type of strenous workouts then your diet may not meet minimum requirements for optimum health. Supplements are meant to keep your body fueled for the grueling demands of your exercise routine and make up for any spots you may be deficient - not to mention there are many supplements that may actually help to improve your performance.

Multivitamin and Mega Vitamin Dosing

No matter how strict and correct your diet is, if you are working out hard on a regular basis, then you are bound to become deficient in some vitamins and minerals. A good, well balanced multivitamin is a must for the serious athlete and a good insurance against nutrient deficiency symptoms. Although the breakdown varies somewhat between brands, most multivitamins will meet your RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of each of it's components.

So if multivitamin supplementation is a good thing, is more better? I am referring to taking larger than daily allowance of specific vitamins. Here you must be careful. There are two kinds of vitamins, water soluble and fat soluble. With water soluble any of the vitamin that the body does not need is eliminated through urine. These types of vitamins are safer to take in larger amounts. The fat soluble ones are not eliminated so directly and can build up in your body over time. This can have serious consequences to your health.

Simple blood tests from your doctor can tell you if you are deficient in a specific vitamin or mineral, which may be the only case when taking higher amounts is appropriate. For most people, the RDA is more than sufficient.

Protein Bars and Protein Powder

Many people are not aware of the very large quantities of protein that are required for your body to build muscle. It can be very difficult to achieve your goals through diet alone. Enter protein supplements. You can buy these products in the form of bars or powder and they are generally made with soy or whey. Generally they provide 12 - 15 grams of protein per serving. If your goal is to beef up then taking a protein supplement may be just what the doctor ordered.
